Making whipped coconut body lotion is very easy, and has many benefits for your skin!

Thank you to The Little Pottery Venture for the pots!

Coconut oil is one of the best body care secrets you can put on your skin, through every season! Scientific evidence has shown that coconut oil has healing properties that allow it to heal dry skin conditions in winter, and provides sunscreen protection in summer, among other benefits:

  • Coconut oil can improve the real hydration and lipid level in skin, including people with the skin condition xerosis, which is associated with a defect in skin barrier function. This has been proven in this 2004 randomized double-blind controlled trial.
  • When applied to the skin, coconut oil can block out up to 20% of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, as shown in this 2001 study.
  • And, this 2003 study comparing coconut oil’s benefits on hair compared to other oils stated that “coconut oil was the only oil found to reduce the protein loss remarkably for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product.”
  • The biochemical makeup of coconut oil make it a great choice for treating wounds over other oils, including olive oil. Read more about it in this 2002 study.
  • Coconut oil is a known antibacterial, and has been shown to provide a barrier against even serious infections such as Staphylococcus aureus, fungi, and various viruses, according to this 2008 study.

That’s all great! And when summer temperatures are high and the coconut oil is melted, application to the skin is easy! The problem is that as winter temperatures drop, coconut oil solidifies and can become quite hard, which makes it difficult to apply smoothly to your skin.

After a recent shower as I was trying to melt the hard bits of coconut oil to the palm of my hand before application, I decided I had to find a better way. And I did. In fact, this was so easy I was embarrassed I didn’t think of it sooner….JUST WHIP IT! WHIP IT GOOD!

You don’t need to add anything else to your coconut oil unless you want to, such as your favorite essential oil.

HOW TO

All you need is your favorite organic, virgin coconut oil and an electric mixer.

Use organic coconut oil for your skin care...you want what you rub into your skin to be as pure as possible.

  • Place 1 cup (feel free to use more or less) of hard coconut oil into a bowl that is large enough to allow the whipped coconut oil to expand in volume.
  • With your hand mixer on low, slowly start to beat your coconut oil.
  • Increase the speed of your hand mixer slowly, making sure to break up all of the large, stubborn clumps of solidified coconut oil.
  • When all of the clumps of coconut oil are fully incorporated, increase your speed to high and whip that oil! It will turn light and fluffy, and double in volume. This is good!
  • Spoon your whipped oil into your favorite container and keep it in your bathroom. It will remain in this whipped, easy-to-apply state, making for a smooth application to your skin, from head to toe.

Of course, if you are allergic to coconut oil, do not do this. But you knew that already, right?

You can incorporate your favorite essential oils into your whipped coconut oil.
